Photos F-4 Phantom II Paradise

This F-4J is from the Sluggers of VF-103. It was photographed at the squadron's home base, NAS Oceana, in April 1976. At that time, VF-103 was a member of Carrier Air Wing 3 (CVW-3) which was assigned to the USS Saratoga (CV-60).

This "CAG bird" Sundowner Phantom was photographed at its home base, NAS Miramar, on 05 October 1975. At this time, VF-111 along with sister squadron VF-51 were both members of Carrier Air Wing 15 which was assigned to the USS Coral Sea (CV-43).

This Phantom from the Grim Reapers of VF-101 was seen taxiing back to the squadron's flight line after a trip to the bombing range. It was photographed on 05 April 1977 at NAS Oceana, still in its bicentennial markings.

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) operated 24 McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II fighter-bomber aircraft in the ground attack role between 1970 and 1973. The Phantoms were leased from the United States Air Force (USAF) as an interim measure owing to delays in the delivery of the RAAF's 24 General Dynamics F-111C bombers. The F-4Es were considered successful in this role, but the government did not agree to a proposal from the RAAF to retain the aircraft after the F-111s entered service in 1973.

It was a sad day in the RAAF when the Phantoms were returned to the USAF in 1973. However, the Phantom did not meet the essential RAAF requirement for all-weather strike, a role the F111 fulfilled admirably and without peer.
