Hi to all ! I would like to start a topic dedicated on F-104 Starfighter combat jet and it's variants. Feel free to contribute to honor this iconic Cold War NATO jet fighter.

I am gonna start with my archives

Ah, Kelly Johnson's little "bottle rocket", she's raging beauty, but I'm afraid we would be stretching it a bit if we called her a "Lady", more like Mata Hari??? amazingly beautiful, but treacherous! I always loved the tip tanks, some of you may recall Chuck Yeager's adventures with this Chick, and later our amazing friend, Daryl Greenameyer, loved that boys Grumman Bearcat, "Conquest 1", but sad when he dusted his own Starfighter, scratch built from parts, in a accident similar to "Uncle Chucks"???

Unfortunately he lost control of the aircraft during the attemt and miraculously survived by ejecting himself with severe bruises, a bleeding eyebrow and two lost fingertips.

Wow, "Hi Oh, Silver, and Away?" the Lone Ranger's very own Starfighter, with room for your "Sweety" in the back?? do you think anybody in the real world actually took their "Sweety" for a ride?? it only took the "Honey Badger" 24 years to fly with me, she was damned impressed, or maybe just grateful to be back on the ground??? we did a night flight after that, but the circuit breaker on the landing lights popped and wouldn't reset, landing in a black hole on a small grass strip with LOT's of light on the North end, and nothing on the South, it was more of an arrival, but I don't think she realized that, LOL!

now that, is a gorgeous airplane, we've seen video's of the "Starfighters", they were supposed to fly at Scott AFB's open house about 10 years ago, but that was the year the "Starfighter's" went bust, buying all that jet A for 3 aircraft, and maintaining them would put a small country out of business.. I was/am very disappointed...

JF-104A (formerly YF-104A, serial # 55-2961) was modified with a hydrogen peroxide reaction control system (RCS). Following a zoom climb to altitudes in the vicinity of 80,000 feet, the RCS system gave the aircraft controllability in the thin upper atmosphere where conventional control surfaces are ineffective, 1961.

Research pilots do not only fly aircraft and spacecraft. In this 1992 photo, NASA's Steve Ishmael is seated on an ejection seat as it is lifted by a crane out of the back cockpit of a NASA TF-104G.

In the end of my thread, i want to add a video of F-104 Starfighter's. This video taken at MacDill Airfest 2008 - Tampa, Florida. Hope you enjoyed:)(Source)

Awesome shots. Thanks a bunch!I see you did the same mistake as we did: deploying that teeny-weeny rocket as a fighter bomber? ?

The first F-104Gs came in 1963 were used as day time interceptors alongside the day/night time interceptor F-102 Delta Daggers and F-100 Super Sabres to fulfill air-to-ground missions. After the acqusition of Phantoms in late 1970s and retirement of F-100s they were used as multirole fighter-bombers but the F-104S bought from Italy remained as interceptor until their retirement from TurAF in 1994.

TurAF might be the one which was used the most different F-104 variants at the same time. During 1980s as the most active years of the aircraft in Turkish service there were around 400 F-104 G/S, TF-104, RF-104 and nuclear capable CF-104 fighters which had bought from various countries like Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Canada and Norway. Also one of the two countries with Italy which operated F-104S ASA with active radar guidance and Aspide BVR missiles.
