Left: Knight of the Military William Order lieutenant-colonel Gijs Tuinman. He served multiple tours and special operation in Africa, Afghanistan and Iraq. Tuinman was awarded the highest chivalric order by King Willem-Alexander in 2014 for his courageous leadership during intense combat operations in Uruzgan. In particular, his leadership under heavy fire during the evacuation of KIA corporal Kevin van de Rijdt, in 2009, attributed to a recommendation for the award by his fellow commandos. Tuinman is currently attached to the Netherlands Special Operations Command (NLD SOCOM).
Right: sergeant first class Joost Molenaar (✝). Molenaar was the tallest man in the corps measuring a healthy 2.05 metres (6' 7"). He first served a tour in Afghanistan with 11 Air Assault Brigade in 2006 and joined the KCT in 2007. As a commando, he served multiple tours including Task Force 55 in Afghanistan and MINUSMA in Mali. Molenaar fought his final unfair battle against cancer, and passed on 18 February 2015.
On 8th July 2014, Czech Soldiers from 4 Fast Deployment Brigade and 43 Airborne Battalion, who provide security of NATO Bagram Airfield, were on joint patrol with Afghan soldiers in Qalandar Khil, 5 kilometers from Bagram Airfield. Taliban had fired a rocket onto Airfield two days previously, so Czechs were on patrol to secure the area.
Czechs were very popular among the locals, so they were asking locals about that rocket attack. A Taliban suicide bomber with suicide vest hid amongst among the locals and detonated close to Czech soldiers, when they giving new school supplies to local children.
4 Czech soldiers, 2 Afghan soldiers and 10 civilians, including women and children were killed in the attack. One Czech soldier was seriously wounded and was transported to American hospital at Bagram Airfield.
On that day, Sergeant Major David Beneš, Sergeant Ivo Klusák, Corporal Libor Ligač and Corporal Jan Šenkýř were killed. Sergeant Major Jaroslav Lieskovan died a few days later in Central Military Hospital in Prague.
