Captain Doug Beattie of the Royal Irish Regiment in Afghanistan in 2006. During this tour he was involved in a 13 day battle which involved bayonet fighting with the enemy.
Doug Beattie led a 60 man patrol, consisting of 13 Brits and around 50 ANA and ANP in Helmand. They were the lead element of a large force for clearance operations. The patrol was supposed to last 48 hours but lasted over 300. The fighting was intense and on the first day Beattie killed a Taliban fighter with his bayonet. Multiple ANA/ANP personnel would be killed. He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery in the action, the third highest award for British servicemen. Today he is the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, a moderate loyalist party in Northern Ireland’s Legislative Assembly
