INDIAN OCEAN (June 24, 2021) The Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) transits with the Kolkata-class stealth guided-missile destroyer INS Kochi (D-64), centre, and the Talwar-class frigate INS Teg (F-45) during a bilateral exercise.

HMS Avenger had a short operational life. She was commissioned on 2-March-1942 and was sunk with a heavy loss of life (516 perished) by U-155 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Adolf Piening on 15 November 1942, just west of Gibraltar. Struck by only one torpedo, she quickly sank. Only twelve members of her crew were rescued.

Six Japanese planes scored five bomb hits on the carrier in three minutes; three of the aircraft also struck the carrier. Saratoga's flight deck forward was wrecked, her starboard side was holed twice and large fires were started in her hangar deck; she lost 123 of her crew dead or missing as well as 192 wounded. Thirty-six of her aircraft were destroyed. Another attack two hours later further damaged her flight deck. Slightly over an hour later, the fires were under control, and Saratoga was able to recover six fighters.
