An aerial bow view of the aircraft carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CV-63) en route to San Diego after being overhauled at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington on January 30, 1983.
The cars were transported onboard when the carrier changed homeports with the proviso that in the event of any fires, they would immediately be dumped over the side!
The aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41) entering Subic Bay, Philippines, in September 1981. On deck we can see F-4S. It was then the only aircraft carrier in the fleet that could not use the F-14. The Phantom was replaced by the F/A-18 Hornet.
USS Enterprise (CVS-6) awaiting disposal at the New York Naval Shipyard on 22 June 1958.
She was sold for scrapping ten days later, on 2 July. USS Independence (CVA-62) is fitting out on the opposite side of the pier.
Ships visible in the left foreground include (from front): USS DeLong (DE-684), USS Coates (DE-685) and USS Hoe (SS-258). Ten other destroyers are also present, as is a "Liberty" type ship. The Schaefer brewery is visible in the center background.
USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in Dry Dock #4 at Hunters Point San Francisco. No date is given but it is after the removal of her "beehive" array in the early 80's.
USS Oriskany (CVA-34) was the first Essex to receive the SCB-27A upgrade (still under construction) and the last Essex modified in 1956-1959 (at Hunters Point). She was the only 27A to receive steam catapults. She is seen here on her post-conversion trials in early 1959.
Sailors and naval aviators from Independence-class light aircraft carrier USS Monterey (CVL-26) play basketball in the downed forward aircraft elevator shaft. The player jumping out on the left is the future 38th President of the United States, Gerald Ford.
