Photos Aircraft Carriers

The German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin in Kiel. This carrier was designed and began construction in the 1930s, but was paused due to a lack of priority when WWII broke out. She sat unfinished throughout the war, and was eventually scuttled in 1945 to prevent her capture. The Soviets refloated the ship and used it in weapons tests.

HMS Invincible was the Royal Navy's lead ship of her class of three light aircraft carriers. She was launched on 3 May 1977 as the seventh ship to carry the name. She was originally designated as an anti-submarine warfare carrier, but was used as an aircraft carrier during the Falklands War, when she was deployed with HMS Hermes. She took over as flagship of the British fleet when Hermes was sold to India. Invincible was also deployed in the Yugoslav Wars and the Iraq War. In 2005, she was decommissioned, and was eventually sold for scrap in February 2011.

During a refit in Rosyth in 2005 - 2006, HMS Ark Royal received a mizzen mast containing communications equipment. The tuned composite gave protection from the weather while allowing the equipment to "see out".

Among the equipment fitted was SPN-720 precision approach radar for aircraft and Tacan. The 2016 sonar was also removed.

She was a much more effective aircraft carrier than when first built in addition to being able to operate in the LPH role as well.

Unfortunately, she was to be discarded barely 4 years hence after David Cameron's Strategic Defence and Security Review in 2010.

A rare shot of all three units of the Invincible class CVS in port. HMS Ark Royal (R07) is leaving Portsmouth Harbour. HMS Illustrious (R06) is right tied up port side to on South Railway Jetty. The newly refitted HMS Invincible (R05) is starboard side to on Boat House Jetty. The photo seems to be around 1989.

The light carrier HMS Illustrious (R06) moored in a flooded dry dock next to the giant HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08) on her christening day in Rosyth on July 17, 2014.

This was Illustrious' last duty before being decommissioned in Portsmouth on August 28, 2014. She retired as the longest-serving aircraft carrier in RN history at 32 years. No bad for a design that was meant for 20 to 25 years of service.

Illustrious was 690ft long compared to QE at 932ft and a 106ft beam compared to QE at 240ft. Displacement was 22,000 tons to 65,000 tons in favour of QE.
