CARTAGENA, Colombia (July 14, 2023) East-coast based U.S. Naval Special Warfare Operators (SEALs) and Colombian special operations personnel conduct over the beach movement training during UNITAS 2023. Hosted this year by Colombia, UNITAS is the world’s longest-running maritime exercise bringing together multinational forces from 20 partner nations, training in joint maritime operations that enhance tactical proficiency and increase interoperability. An F/A-18F Super Hornet assigned to the "Diamondbacks" of Strike Fighter Squadron 102 (VFA-102) makes an arrested landing on the flight deck of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) 7 August 2003
(Aug. 7, 2003) -- Final checkers from the "Diamondbacks" of Strike Fighter Squadron One Zero Two (VFA-102) leap in the air to inspect the aileron of an F/A-18F Super Hornet prior to launching from the flight deck of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74)
They are more than likely checking to see that the wingfold pin has dropped. There is a small “pin” about the size of a soda can, and painted, that protrudes on the top of the wing at the wingfold to indicate that the the wings are not locked in the spread position. This pin is up when the wings are folded. As the jet taxies to the cat and spreads its wings, the wings spread, and as they lock, the pin falls into place leaving a flush upper surface. The aircrew can check both sides and there are final checker ground crew that double check by jumping up to look along the top of the wing.
