A very 'moody' shot of a motor torpedo (PT) boat patrolling off coast of New Guinea in 1943. Santo had a PT Boat base which is the site of the current and future museums. The PT boats were powered by three marine modified Packard V-12 aircraft engines. They carried 11,400 litres of 100 octane aviation fuel, enough for a 12-hour patrol. The boats consumed 760 litres of fuel per hour at a cruising speed of 23 knots, increasing to 1,900 litres per hour at their top speed of up to 50 knots. US Archives photo.
