Thirty-eight years ago today March 27, 1983 as USS FORRESTAL CV-59 rested on keel blocks in Drydock 5, U. S. Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, PA. SOPA is Commanding Officer USS SARATOGA CV-60. Commanding Officer is Captain Bobby C. Lee, USN. Ships present include USS SARATOGA CV-60, and various units of the U. S. Atlantic Fleet plus various yard and district craft, and units of the Mothball Fleet. The ship is in cold iron status. The ship is receiving all services from the pier. Material condition Yoke has been set throughout the ship.
USS FORRESTAL’s Service Life Extension Program continues.
Both USS FORRESTAL’s port and starboard rudders were removed, for only the second time since the ship was built. Both rudders will be removed for painting and preservation. Their removal, along with the rudder pins, represent one of the most challenging feats the machinists, riggers, woodworking and crane operators have faced.
