HM2 Gerald Strode, 21, is decorated with the nation's second highest medal. The Navy Cross was presented to Strode by MajGen Donn J. Robertson, commanding general of the 1st Marine Division. Strode received the award for extraordinary heroism under fire in a battle during Operation Swift, September 4, 1967, when he saved the lives of several wounded Marines."

Marine Lance Corporal William G. Cox (Jackson, Mississippi) emerges from one of many Viet Cong tunnels found in the Batangan Peninsula. Private First Class R. L. Sandy, a rifleman with the 2d Battalion, 26th Marines [2/26] finds that going down a hill can be just as rough as climbing it during Operation Bold Mariner.
