The A-4 Skyhawk was at one time nicked name "Scooter".
I actually served on a ship that had A-4s assigned to it's air wing. The USS Hancock (CVA 19). We had three Skyhawk squadrons as part of CVW-21. VA-212, VA-55 & VA-164.
Those aircraft had poor or no nose gear steering so a guide bar had to be used to maneuver the A-4 on the flight deck.

One thing I liked about the "Scooter" was that it almost never had hung ordnance. If it went off the pointy end of the ship with Mk 82 500lb bombs ..it would comeback empty.. and Ordies delight!.

Scooters were also very reliable aircraft..more than likely due to their simplicity.

At one time over forty years ago all CVW aircraft displayed colorful paint schemes..until it was discovered that radar reflected said paint schemes..Thats no good..

So..this is how Carrier borne aircraft looked back in the day.

A Grumman F-14A Tomcat (BuNo 160391) of fighter squadron VF-84 Jolly Rogers, Carrier Air Wing Eight (CVW-8) aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) circa 1977.

Four U.S. Navy McDonnell F-4B Phantom II (BuNo 149460, 150450, 151430, 152208) of Fighter Squadron VF-14 "Tophatters" in flight. Operating the F-4B, VF-14 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 1 (CVW-1) aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CVA-67) from November 1968 to December 1973.
The photo was taken before 1973, as 149460 was retired to the MASDC as 8F0027 on 17 December 1972; 150450 was written off on 26 November 1973 while in service with VMFA-323; 151430 was converted to an F-4N and still in use as a ground target at China Lake in 2007. 152208 was converted to an F-4N and retired to the MASDC as 8F0101 on 12 March 1982.

My favorite old school paint scheme of all time..

Ah yes.. fond memories of the F-14 Tomcat. Tomcats while a beautiful aircraft to observe was in my and many others opinion a maintenance nightmare. Requiring more maintenance hours per flight hour than any other Naval aircraft...

USS Carl Vinson conducts F-35C day and night Flight Operations

PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The Navy's first stealth fighter conducted flight operations Oct. 18, aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) as the aircraft carrier trained off the coast of Southern California.

An F-35C Lightning II, the Navy variant of the Joint Strike Fighter, landed on and launched from Carl Vinson during day and nighttime operations, completing another step toward becoming an operationally capable aircraft.

"The training helped us to confidently land and launch an aircraft we've never dealt with before," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 2nd Class Alexsis Labrake. "Being the first to ever do it on the Vinson was a pretty cool experience."

The aircraft from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 125, based in Lemoore, California, flew aboard as Carl Vinson conducted carrier qualifications.

"We're supporting efforts to flight test the current helmet mounted display system," said Lt. Cmdr. Josh Reynolds, VFA-125's operations officer.

The F-35C is the world's only fifth generation, long-range stealth strike fighter designed and built for aircraft carrier operations. It is scheduled to achieve initial operating capability for the Navy late next year.

Carl Vinson will likely be the first West Coast-based carrier to deploy with an F-35C squadron after undergoing a scheduled maintenance period in 2019.

"It really is a first," said Reynolds. "For the first time we will have the ability to launch a stealthy, deep-strike outfit from a carrier that can take part in penetration of enemy air defenses on day one."

Commissioned in 1982, Carl Vinson is America's third Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. The ship's primary mission is to conduct sustained combat air operations with an air wing complement of more than 60 aircraft.

Vinson operates with a strike group that serves as the Navy's premier forward-deployed force, providing a deterrent against aggression and protecting U.S. interests around the world.

The unique capabilities of the F-35C, coupled with proven aircraft in the current U.S. inventory, significantly enhance the carrier strike group's battle space awareness, lethality and survivability.
