(Aug. 22, 2023) Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) returns to San Diego following an initial sea trial period after modernisation. Boxer will continue sea trials and workup preparations for its eventual deployment.

At the time United States Navy operated carriers and the Iowa class battleships as the centerpieces of their own groups, called carrier battlegroups and battleship battlegroups respectively. However, the were occasionally deployed together and operated as part of each other's battlegroups.
USS Iowa (BB-61) and USS Midway (CV-41) are the centerpiece of the fleet here. They are surrounded by escort and support ships. Some of the ships include the cruiser USS Ticonderoga (CG-47) and two cruisers of the Belknap class. The destroyers USS Deyo (DD-989), USS Oldendorf (DD-972), and USS Towers (DDG-9). Two Knox class frigates round out the escort ships. Support ships include the oiler USS Cimarron (AO-177), the oiler USS Mispillion (T-AO-105), the ammunition ship USS Kilaulea (T-AE-26), and the combat stores ship USS White Plains (AFS-4).
