Soldiers of the Thai Army embark to South Korea, 1950. Thailand was among the first Asian nations to respond to UN resolution 84, in response to the invasion by North Korean Communist forces. They wear French-style Adrian helmets and are carrying Type 66 Siamese Mauser (modified Japanese Type 38 Arisaka) (legacies of WW2 struggles against France and cooperation/struggle against Imperial Japan). Ultimately, more than 11,000 Thai troops would serve in the Korean War alongside UN forces, fighting notably at the Battle of Pork Chop Hill.

Six-year-old Kim Meon Sikieh lived near the Kimpo airstrip in South Korea - and in 1953 he got a real thrill: being lifted into the cockpit of a No. 77 Squadron RAAF Gloster Meteor, "Miss Bunbury", complete with flying helmet, goggles and oxygen mask.
But photos like this sit alongside a much harder truth. During the Korean War, it’s estimated more than 100,000 Korean children were orphaned or displaced, separated from family by death, geography and poverty.
Many were cared for by UN personnel in informal, everyday ways whilst stationed in the country - and Australians across the army, air force and navy sponsored orphanages, shared rations, and hosted gatherings for children near camps and bases.
