A unique shot of a grinning Russian aviator in the tail gunner's position of a Russian Tupolev Tu-16 "Badger" bomber whilst another airman in the blister looks as though he's photographing the photographer!
The picture was taken in 1970 from a Royal Navy FG1 Phantom fleet defence fighter of 892 NAS from HMS Ark Royal (R09) which intercepted the Russian intruder 150 miles out from the British car...rier.
Even today, some 50 years later, Russian Tupolev Tu-95 "Bear" long-range strategic bombers frequently skirt British air-space to test our defences.
To counter this RAF Typhoon interceptors are swiftly dispatched to shepherd them away...it's an ongoing game of cat and mouse!

Damage Sustained to HMS London after the Amethyst incident, 1949
In the spring of 1949 the frigateAmethyst became trapped by advancing Communist Chinese forces up the Yangtze River. London sailed up the river as a show of strength in an attempt to help free the frigate. The Communist forces were not intimidated and took the cruiser under fire. London returned fire with her 8-inch and 4-inch guns, firing several hundred rounds, but was hit several times. Her two forward 8-inch turrets and "X" turret aft were damaged and rendered inoperable, and her bridge sustained several hits. London retreated down river and returned to Hong Kong for repairs
