What was the reason for that?

Like I've said standardization around T-72 and T-90 (completely forgot about it), I let Russian experts chimed in, but I think the maintenance and upgrade of the gas turbine engine was too expensive. Ukrainians use a diesel version, and due to its sheer speed, maneuverability and better trained crews from Airborne and Marines brigades, T-80s performed much better and beyond their small numbers compared to the "regular" T-64s.

As far as I know on T-80BVM the ones which modernized with the Sosna-U thermal gunner's sights and new fire control system in 2017 should be still in active service.
