The red colour is a rust resistance paint, the Soviets (and Russians) just never bothered to put a layer of grey over it like most NATO countries.

Vice versa. I think Jaybe is right, AK guys have Zenit PKM. Still NPZ-PK1 is really interesting red dot, but I don't have $400 burning a hole in my pocket to say nothing of $800 PK-120
