Warfare Northwestern Aleppo offensive (2024)

Footage of underground tunnels of the former Syrian army has been published. The Syrian army previously used these tunnels to store military equipment and R-17 ballistic missiles of the 9K72 Elbrus complex, also known as Scud. The 9K72 Elbrus missile system was developed in the USSR in 1957. The Syrian army used Scud-B, Scud-S and Scud-D missiles, developed from 1964 to 1985.

Russia wants it's bases back and also some control of the country. Former Syrian leader is now living in Russia. Hmmmmm....

So, is he an actual leader deceiving the foreign audience?
Is he a leader who means good but has no control over his underlings?
Is he a social-media figurehead and strawman?
Perhaps a bit of all of the above.
Or, as you said, a puppet to, let's be honest, Erdogan?
That's what I've been leaning towards for the past two days: Maybe he's not the well-respected leader he's made out to be, but everyone keeps answering to him (when it suits them) because Erdogan has made Jolani being in charge a prerequisite for Turkish support.

Well, there was never going to be a total break between Russia and Syria (though I would've expected an agreement to take longer). Assad tied Syria's economy to Russia. Most foreign investment in Syria is Russian. Jolani couldn't ignore that.

let me think, I just ran a successful military campaign, against a dictator, who had support from another dictator. Now the dictator wants to be my friend. Plus he is a scheming murdering thug, who would invite me for tea, and leave me to die from radiation.

Yes, thats fine. What could possibly go wrong.....

Russia is nearing an agreement with Syria's new leadership to keep two vital military bases in the Middle East state, a key objective of the Kremlin after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad.

Talks are taking place for Russian forces to remain at the naval port in Tartus and the air base at Hmeimim, said people with knowledge of the matter in Moscow, Europe and the Middle East,

Turkey has to give something substantial back to Russia after the humiliation of kicking down the door and making them evacuate the country in less than a fortnight. Otherwise perhaps the PKK might suddenly finds themselves swimming in Iglas and Kornets or their Iranian copies from an anonymous source for use against Turkish helicopters, vehicles, guard posts, civilian airliners? The Turkish border is rather porous after all ...

There is clearly a strong Turkish hand in this. I don’t know enough to know why now. So what sort of Syria does Turkey want? A tribal war zone? ( it already was) or a peaceful enough place for 3m Syrians to go home from Turkey?

It’s clearly a kick in the nuts for putin, so is this trump/ Ukraine related?

Syrian journalists have taken a panoramic video of the Russian Khmeimim airbase in Syria using a drone. As can be seen from the video, the aircraft are in hangars, but there are no protective nets on the hangars from drones. It is worth noting that there are presumably no anti-drone units at the base, since the drone is freely filming. Currently, the airbase is home to Russian Su-34NVO, Su-24M bombers and Su-35S fighters. Also visible in the frame are two Il-76 military transport aircraft of Russia and one Il-76 of the Syrian Air Force. According to Bloomberg, Russia is close to reaching an agreement with the new Syrian leadership on maintaining two military bases in Syria. If the agreement is concluded, the Port of Tartus and the Khmeimim airbase will remain in Syria.
