Russia wants it's bases back and also some control of the country. Former Syrian leader is now living in Russia. Hmmmmm....What can I say but: hip hip!
Perhaps a bit of all of the above. So, is he an actual leader deceiving the foreign audience?
Is he a leader who means good but has no control over his underlings?
Is he a social-media figurehead and strawman?
That's what I've been leaning towards for the past two days: Maybe he's not the well-respected leader he's made out to be, but everyone keeps answering to him (when it suits them) because Erdogan has made Jolani being in charge a prerequisite for Turkish support.Or, as you said, a puppet to, let's be honest, Erdogan?
Well, there was never going to be a total break between Russia and Syria (though I would've expected an agreement to take longer). Assad tied Syria's economy to Russia. Most foreign investment in Syria is Russian. Jolani couldn't ignore that.Russia wants it's bases back and also some control of the country. Former Syrian leader is now living in Russia. Hmmmmm....
let me think, I just ran a successful military campaign, against a dictator, who had support from another dictator. Now the dictator wants to be my friend. Plus he is a scheming murdering thug, who would invite me for tea, and leave me to die from radiation.Russia wants it's bases back and also some control of the country. Yes, thats fine. What could possibly go wrong.....
Turkey has to give something substantial back to Russia after the humiliation of kicking down the door and making them evacuate the country in less than a fortnight. Otherwise perhaps the PKK might suddenly finds themselves swimming in Iglas and Kornets or their Iranian copies from an anonymous source for use against Turkish helicopters, vehicles, guard posts, civilian airliners? The Turkish border is rather porous after all ...Russia is nearing an agreement with Syria's new leadership to keep two vital military bases in the Middle East state, a key objective of the Kremlin after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad.
Talks are taking place for Russian forces to remain at the naval port in Tartus and the air base at Hmeimim, said people with knowledge of the matter in Moscow, Europe and the Middle East,

There is clearly a strong Turkish hand in this. I don’t know enough to know why now. So what sort of Syria does Turkey want? A tribal war zone? ( it already was) or a peaceful enough place for 3m Syrians to go home from Turkey?Turkey has to give something substantial back to Russia after the humiliation of kicking down the door and making them evacuate the country in less than a fortnight. Okay now, who saw this coming?
It would be nice to see the russian bases in Syria go booom like this. But that will not happen (from israels side)...
