USN:
Midway class USS Midway (CV-41) sailing in the wake of the battleship USS Iowa (BB-61). A Charles F Adams class guided missile destroyer, probably USS Towers (DDG9) is off the Midway's starboard side, December 1987.
RN:
HMS A3 on sea trials in Morecambe Bay, July 1904.
The A-class submarines were the second class built for the RN by Vickers in Barrow-in-Furness, essentially an improved Holland. This photo was taken around the time of her commissioning in July 1904, the lack of any ensign makes it impossible to tell if it was taken before or after, though the white painted stripes around her conning tower would be removed in service.
Typical of early submarines, the class had a poor safety record with six of thirteen boats lost. A3 would be lost with all hands during an exercise with HMS Hazard in 1912 after an accidental collision, the vessel was salvaged and sunk again as a target three months later.
