On December 11, the first transport of two UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters arrived by air at the base in Lielvārde, Latvia. In September 2018, the Latvian government decided to purchase four brand new machines in the configuration as for the American troops. The American-made helicopters will replace the four machines that the Latvians handed over to the fighting Ukraine in August 2022, i.e. two Mi-2s and two Mi-8s. Another two UH-60Ms are expected to enter service before the end of 2023. Black Hawks, in addition to transport tasks, will carry out patrol, public service support and rescue missions. The latter is important because Lithuania, not having its own fighter aviation, has undertaken to secure the activities of NATO's Baltic Air Policing contingents in maintaining SAR duty.
