Unit 669 of the Israeli Air Force is one of the IDF's top four elite units. The Airborne Combat SAR (Search-and-Rescue) unit performs countless missions, including the rescue and extraction of downed pilots and ground forces from the depths of enemy territory and providing them initial (and possibly life-saving) medical treatment if necessary.

Thunderstruck
23 years ago today, the first two “Ra’am” (Thunder) F-15I fighter jets landed in Israel.
The F-15I, an Israeli version of the F-15E Strike Eagle, was designed and produced specifically for the IAF by McDonnel Douglas (Now Boeing). The heavy payload capacity of the advanced fighter along with its advanced systems make it optimal for carrying out distant strikes in long ranges, low-altitudes, at any given hour, and in all weather conditions.
Based at Hatzerim Airbase, the 69th (“Hammers”) Squadron is the only IAF squadron to operate the “Ra’am”. The aircraft’s first operational mission occurred on January 11th, 1999, just a year after their arrival, when a pair of jets struck terror targets in Lebanon.
To this day, F-15Is continue to be a central part of the IAF’s mission of defending Israel’s skies and citizens in routine and emergency
