In 1986, a United States Air Force McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was captured in action over the arid landscape of Bardenas Reales, a bombing and gunnery range in Navarre, Spain.
This training area, characterised by its rugged badlands, sandstone cliffs, and vast open plateaus, was a frequent host to NATO exercises and precision strike training missions during the Cold War.

IAI proposed a PW1120-powered Phantom, building one prototype. The Super Phantom or F4-2000, capable of exceeding Mach1 without afterburners, was showcased at the 1987 Paris Air Show. McDD halted its development, fearing it would rival the FA-18C/D and impact future F/A-18 sales
