In the early 70s, the IAF began the purchase of 12 American F-4 Phantom aircraft for photography purposes. The first six Phantoms were nicknamed "Toads" due to their brownish-green colour scheme. As their paint wore off, they were repainted in brighter colours, to match the rest of the IAF's aircraft and became "Frogs". In 1977, the remaining six aircraft began making their way to Israel, this time painted grey like the F-15 fighter jet. The 69 ("Hammers") Squadron integrated 4 of these Phantoms, three "Frogs" and one grey, earning them the clever nickname - "The Princess and the Frogs".
