Something worth keeping an eye on during the pandemic , the environment . It unwittingly seems to be solving a fair few issues and will be interesting to see if our now lack of industrial activity actually makes a difference to earth's biosphere . Its almost like a live experiment....

Despite a highly reduced road traffic and an air traffic down to almost 0, the Ile-de-France and Grand Est regions still registered pollution spikes.

Interesting stuff . Speaking from the UK coal and wet wood burning is being banned in the next couple of years .

I remember patio heaters being banned 5 years or so ago for the same reason and all this craze of everyone having log burners installed because it's " on trend " wants consigning to the dustbin unless there's no choice.
Again , the recent drop in use of the traditional talking points regards pollution ( cars / planes etc ) it is interesting to see what is actually going on .

I think the culprit is in the East...where the temperatures dropped...and where coal is used..even in Germany because of nuclear power is really baaaad.

But in Paris, coal is not that widely used, is it?
Fuel, eventually? Especially in the suburbs?

Anyone noticed a array of articles and video's falsely proclaiming that because of the lockdown .. Animals are now entering towns , Turtles seen on beaches that haven't been seen in years and .. latest one .. an article claiming an Photograph of Mt Everest is the first time in 30 yr's that such am image has been made possible .. . claiming due to lock down ..

yep.....all so clean if we would just stop moving around....

This. But regarding particulate matter there is another factor that has traditionally been ignored or neglected at best: Ammonia emissions from agriculture will react with other gases once they are released into the atmosphere, and produce fine particles. This is not about farting cattle or artificial fertilising, but results from the loads of dung and slurry that get dumped on our fields. Back in 2010, agriculture was already the predominant source of particulate matter in Europe, and this has not changed since.

And what's false about that? If there's less traffic and less human presence, wild animals are more prone to entering our "habitat". Just like wild boar looking for food are more likely to turn up on a villager's doorstep than on a city-dweller's.

Nothing is false. Unusual encounters have been made. Animals always try to expand or at least explore new territories for food, shelter.... A lot of these explorations are hindered by human activities or presence. Now it is quieter, fin whales have been seen where they didnt came before, deers, foxes, pumas, too. More hedgehogs and toads moving were noticed (rather than smashed as roadkills). Even a what looked like a blue fin shark entered the harbor of Menton for a little inquisitive tour.
Plus, as it is quieter, a lot of species are mire active or more noticeable. Birds songs in particular

Here in Barcelona reports and videos of wild boars in the streets. Haven't seen any myself, but the videos look legit. Not strange IMHO. When I was living in Taipei, I witnessed whole groups of wild dogs wandering through the streets at night when there wasn't any human traffic.

Yup, for every bad thing come some good others.

Criminality, the drug market, traffic accidents are dramatically dropping; the wildlife (even that of Europe) is looking forward to bloom again.

It’s a quiet apocalypse, but humans aren’t the ones making profits of it or rather taking advantage of it. How’s that hard to fathom, Colin?

The air here is definitely fresher as well, now that there are no tourists coming in on many flights landing at nearby El Prat. Hardly any cars in the streets.

Well, that's embarassing… ?

As urban air pollution levels in Germany remain high despite an unprecedented reduction of road traffic during the lockdown, a hotly debated pet project of the Greens and other leftist fear-mongers – a ban on diesel-engine cars – has been exposed as an absurdity. The transport ministry has urged the cities that instated these restrictions (oftentimes unilaterally and in a declared attempt to spoil private transport in line with leftist policies) that driving bans for reason of air pollution prevention must now come "off the table at last".

Needless to say, their proponents refuse to believe it.

Hi Lux owners Aussie are apparently taking a class action against Toyota for a problem with their eco - engine that accumulates exhaust waste then one day blows it all out the exhaust system and ends up with the owner fined for pollution.

Having read EU UK taxes on gas guzzling high emitters I can understand why the local importers are bringing them into NZ.

Appallingly the little 1.5 litre naturally aspirated Suzuki Jimny may not be sold in the UK as its too high CO2.
