Duterte declares martial law in Mindanao

President Rodrigo Duterte declared the entire island of Mindanao in Southern Philippines under Martial Law. The announcement was made by Palace spokesperson Ernesto Abella a few minutes past 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

He added that the effectivity of the martial rule will last for 60 days.

"The President has called me and asked me to announce that as of 10 p.m. Manila time, he has already declared Martial Law for the entire island of Mindanao," he said in a press briefing in Moscow, Russia.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, during the same press conference, said Duterte will cut short his Russia trip following the atrocities in Marawi City.

Mindanao is now under Martial Law due to the attacks carried out by the ISIS-inspired Maute Group on Marawi City. Churches and other buildings has been burned and people are being taken as hostages and human shields.

This is an M-14. when I was stationed at NAS Cubi PT Bataan, Republic of the Philippines from '75-'77. For about 1 year of that time I was the range master of NAS Cubi PT. I was responsible for 360 of these weapons...plus a whole bunch of other small arm weapons. 38s, .45s & shotguns.

Maute rebels captured a bank armored car and was reportedly destroyed by govt troops. As of May 27, 2017, 31 Maute rebels killed, six of them are foreigners from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. 11 soldiers gave up their lives for the country.

Battle in Marawi against ISIS

Armed Forces of the Republic of the Philippines battles to retake city from Islamist rebels. Philippine army battles to contain Isis attacks from spreading to second city. Curfews and heavy military presence in Iligan, a city of 350,000, amid fears Islamist militants may seek to expand conflict. Police and security services have imposed a night-time curfew and increased their presence in a second Philippine city following reports that Islamist militants fighting fierce battles in Marawi might pose as civilians to sneak out and open a new front.

More than 90% of Marawi’s 200,000 population have fled a week of street clashes and aerial strikes. Many have relocated to Iligan City, 38km (24 miles) to the north, where authorities have implemented a 10pm to 4am curfew. The extended curfew followed comments from Colonel Alex Aduca, chief of the Fourth Mechanised Infantry Battalion, who told local radio that some rebels had been caught trying to get into Iligan.“We don’t want what’s happening in Marawi to spill over in Iligan,” he said.

MANILA, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Ten soldiers have been killed and eight others wounded on Wednesday during a government airstrike in Marawi City in the southern Philippines as the military fired rockets to flush out the remaining militants, the Philippine defense chief said on Thursday.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana broke the news during a speech on Thursday, saying," (on Wednesday) we had a tragedy that involved our troops."

"A group of of our military, Army men were hit by our own airstrike. We lost men, 10 killed and eight wounded," he said.
He added, "It is sad but sometimes that happens, sometimes in the tug of war. Maybe the coordination was not properly done so we hit our own people."

The military is expected to elaborate more on the incident later Thursday.
