When USS Independence encountered a full-rigged ship in the Mediterranean in 1962, the carrier signaled to ask the sailing vessel to identify. “Amerigo Vespucci, Italian Navy,” was the response.“ The Independence reportedly signaled back, "You are the most beautiful ship in the world."

The newly commissioned USS Enterprise (CV-6) makes her way up the Elizabeth River to Norfolk Navy Yard on June 17, 1938. She had been commissioned the previous month and would embark on her shakedown cruise to Rio de Janeiro in July.

HMS Centaur (R06) with HMS Eagle (R05) in 1964/5. Unknown location. Eagle has just completed her £31m modernization and Centaur is at the end of her operational career as a carrier after just 12 years of service. She would go on for a few more years as an accommodation ship in Devonport and Portsmouth

Is that a bunch of F-3s parked behind the E-1?
 
HMS Hermes (R12) and HMS Eagle (R05) pictured together at Gibraltar in December 1969. Both ships had participated in Exercise Decamp the previous November.

Within a year, Hermes would have her catapults and arresting gear removed and would operate as a commando carrier.

USS Point Cruz (CVE-119) a Commencement Bay-class escort carrier on the 25th of June 1955.

These were the ultimate WW2 escort carriers but soon became obsolete during the Cold War.

They served as ASW carriers but were considered too slow and too small to effectively operate the newer and larger ASW aircraft entering service such as the Grumman AF Guardian and later the S2-F Tracker (seen on deck).

They were eventually replaced in the late 1950s by Essex class carriers converted to the CVS role.
