On May 26, 1954 the USS BENNINGTON CV-20 suffered an explosion which claimed the lives of over 100 men and officers. This was the second worst ship disaster not involving enemy action at the time.
hello everyone, just been reading a article about some terrible happenings aborad aircraft carriers; https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/aviation/a14416145/fire-on-the-flight-deck/ Just wonder if @bdpopeye would ever remember these happenings?
These shots are often credited to ESSEX, but ESSEX never got the athwartships catapult in the hangar bay. She was commissioned without cats, got a single short cat in Pearl Harbor, and finished the war with only the one cat. There were two H-8 cats in Bremerton that were finally installed after the war. She was decommissioned with the hydraulic cats as well, never getting the steam cat upgrade. These pics are actually from Hornet but often credited to ESSEX
.
There were originally no flight deck tractors. Planes were pushed manually from place to place. The story has it that the "plane pushers" comshawed a couple jeeps from a bunch that were on the pier when they got to Pearl. The metal shop rigged up towbars and away they went. No one questioned it. The fleet admiral wanted to see how ESSEX could be so fast at launching, visited ESSEX for a look-see. Shortly after, there were jeeps and towmotors assigned to all the carriers in the fleet.
Morning guys, I thought I would share some pictures of my first interaction with US Carriers, I think it was Rimpac 75 - Pearl Harbor the USS Kittyhawk CV63. I was "Gob smacked"it was HUGE!!! I was aboard the HMAS Melbourne about 1/3 the size of the Kittyhawk, I had a couple of photos of them alongside but I can't find them, I will search through my pics and see if I still have them. In the meantime here are a few Kittyhawk and USS America pics to check out.
If there are any "Old Salts" out there with pictures from Rimpac 75 could you please post them, even if they a grainy or damaged, I will repair and repost them.

Thanks anyway Bravo, there might be some "Old Codgers" like me out there that may have some if I'm lucky.
In the meantime Will the real JFK please stand up!!!!
Have a good one guys.
You gotta love the images of those "Tomcats" on the flight deck, my personal favourite fighter of all time, I was really sorry to see them go but I was also surprised to hear from Popeyes thread about the maintenance issues with them. Still the best of the best as far as I'm concerned though.
Just my 2 cents lol
