Morocco’s army said Tuesday it had agreed with Israel to strengthen military cooperation including in intelligence and cybersecurity, following defense meetings in Rabat.

The two countries “agreed to further strengthen cooperation and expand it to other areas, including in intelligence, air defense and electronic warfare,” the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces said in a statement.

The announcement on Tuesday followed the first meeting of the monitoring committee for Moroccan-Israeli defense cooperation in the Moroccan capital.

The two-day meeting examined military cooperation, including in the fields of “logistics, training and the acquisition and modernization of equipment.”

The two countries formalized ties in 2020, following similar agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. The agreements were brokered by the Trump administration and are together known as the Abraham Accords.

Ethiopia has acquired Chinese-built 155 mm SH15 wheeled self-propelled howitzers (SPH), it was revealed on 21 January.

The SH15s were seen in footage that was released as part of the coverage of a visit by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Awash Arba Combat Technical School, but the SPHs were filmed at Harar Meda Air Base in Bishoftu, south of Addis Ababa.

The SPHs were lined up in four columns of eight vehicles, indicating 32 have been delivered, although not all of them could be seen. Planet satellite imagery shows 32 large vehicles lined up in the same formation at Harar Meda Air Base on 21 January but were gone later that day.

The Ethiopian Press Agency released a photograph showing at least seven SH15s also participated in a parade that Abiy viewed at the Awash Arba Combat Technical School, which Janes has located 165 km east of Addis Ababa. Shadows indicate the parade took place in the morning, leaving insufficient time for any of the SH15s seen at Harar Meda to participate, meaning Ethiopia almost certainly has more than 32 of the new SPHs.

Produced by Norinco, the SH15 is the export variant of an SPH that China's People's Liberation Army reportedly refers to as the PCL-181. Norinco says the SH15's 52 calibre long gun has a maximum range of 50 km with extended-range base-bleed ammunition; its 6×6 chassis has a unique suspension mechanism that improves accuracy; and it comes with a command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) system that enables it to operate as part of a network.

Burkina Faso announced on Sunday that operations by the French army in the jihadist-hit West African state were officially over, after bilateral relations soured in recent months.

Senior officers from Burkinabe and French forces in the country held a flag-lowering ceremony to mark the occasion at a camp on the outskirts of the capital Ouagadougou on Saturday, Burkina's army said in a statement.

Last month France confirmed it would withdraw its contingent of hundreds of troops stationed in Burkina Faso, after the junta ruling the Sahel country demanded the force pull out within four weeks.

The request came days after Burkina's Prime Minister Apollinaire Kyelem de Tembela declared Russia to be a "reasonable" choice of new partner in the anti-jihadist fight.

"This does not mean the end of diplomatic relations between Burkina Faso and France," government spokesman Jean-Emmanuel Ouedraogo told broadcaster RTV following the announcement.

Some of the troops left days after that announcement.

Their departure marks another significant step in the scaling-down of France's military presence in the region.

The junta in neighbouring Mali also insisted French troops leave and in 2022 French President Emmanuel Macron ended the anti-jihadist Barkhane mission there after a decade.

The jihadist attacks continue in the region.

Moroccan defense website FAR-MAroc has published images of Elbit System’s PULS (Precise & Universal Launching Systems) artillery rocket systems, purchased by Morocco.

Apparently, the Moroccan Army selected Tatra Trucks, a Czech vehicle manufacturer, to carry the rocket launchers – which are capable of launching multiple ammunition types to distances of up to 300 km. According to the publication, Morocco ordered the PULS launchers with Elbit’s Combat NG system, a fully-integrated modular artillery solution.

Chad:
The United Arab Emirates has sent military vehicles and other security gear to Chad in support of anti-"terrorism" efforts and border protection, the oil-rich Gulf state said on Sunday.

Chad is a neighbor of Niger, where a coup late last month toppled one of the last pro-Western leaders in the terror-plagued Sahel region.

The UAE's official news agency WAM included a photo of several desert-colored armored vehicles, with the Emirati and Chadian flags draped over two of them. Emirati firm NIMR manufactures the vehicles.

"The UAE has sent a shipment of military vehicles and security equipment to the Republic of Chad, to support its capabilities in combatting terrorism and enhancing border protection," WAM said, without providing details on the equipment.

WAM said the two countries had signed a military cooperation agreement in June during a visit by Chad's president, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, who has led the country since his father, Idriss Deby Itno, died from wounds battling rebels more than two years ago.

The military cooperation pact was one of several bilateral agreements signed between the two countries, WAM said.

Niger
The French army is holding talks with Niger's military over withdrawing "elements" of its presence there following a coup, a defence ministry source said on Tuesday.

There has been speculation that France will be forced into a full military pullout from Niger after the July 26 putsch, which ousted French ally President Mohamed Bazoum.

Some 1,500 troops are deployed in Niger as part of France's wider fight against jihadists in the Sahel.
The country became a crucial hub for France after coups forced the withdrawal of French troops from neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso.
"Discussions on the withdrawal of certain military elements have begun," the defence ministry source told AFP, asking not to be named. The source did not give details.

Relations between Niger and France, the country's former colonial power and traditional ally, went swiftly downhill after Paris stood by the elected Bazoum and declared the post-coup regime as illegitimate.

On August 3, the coup leaders renounced several military cooperation agreements with France, including one with a month-long notice period that expired on Sunday.

Niger's military-appointed Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine said Monday that "contacts" were under way about a "very swift" departure for Paris' troops.

Zeine nevertheless said he hoped to "maintain cooperation if possible with a country with which we have shared many things."

A source close to Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu told AFP on Tuesday that talks were in progress about "easing movements of French military resources" in Niger.

That source noted that French forces had been "immobilised since anti-terrorist cooperation was suspended" following the military takeover.

The French forces are mostly based at an airfield near the capital Niamey, which in recent days has been targeted by thousands of protesters calling on them to leave.

The coup has been seen as a new major blow to French influence in the region following military takeovers in Mali in 2020 and Burkina Faso in 2022.

The Mozambican military is seeking attack drones to support its troops battling insurgents in Cabo Delgado province.

The military has rejected Turkish UAVs due to supply delays and is now looking at Chinese suppliers. France’s I-SEE Group is also considering selling two of its IC-D UAVs to Mozambique.

The Mozambican military has been fighting an insurgency in Cabo Delgado since 2017. The insurgency has displaced hundreds of thousands of people and caused a humanitarian crisis
