Anchorage at New York, NY. Fleet Week New York, NY. April 29 to May 3, 1989.
FORRESTAL arrives at New York, NY for Fleet Week. FORRESTAL’s outstanding professionalism and team spirit was particularly evident as she represented the U. S. Navy during Fleet Week 89. FORRESTAL led the parade of ships up the Hudson River and into New York Harbor. A representative selection of carrier-based aircraft from Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN was aboard for the visit.
This also was the 200th anniversary of the U. S. Presidential Office. Flight deck personnel formed on the flight deck to spell out “WE LOVE N.Y,” plus personnel formed a large red heart shape on the flight deck.
FORRESTAL’s participation in New York’s Fleet Week ’89 was a grand success for both the city and the sail and the sailors.
The second annual event began April 29th as FORRESTAL cruised up the Hudson River to Pier 88. Sailors from the FORRESTAL and other U.S. Navy ships began making the most of their time in the “Big Apple.”
As sailors strolled through the city streets in the service dress blues, taking in all the sights and sounds, they were welcomed with open arms by New Yorkers from all walks of life. The preconceived notion of the hard-nosed, cold New Yorker was quickly lost in an ocean of friendly faces, pats on the back, and hardy welcomes.
Many crew members spent their afternoons sightseeing, thanks to the many tours and special rates provided by the folks in Special Services, and the City of New York.
The Fleet Week celebrations is intended to provide the city-dwellers of New York an opportunity to see their U.S. Navy up close and personal, which is exactly what FORRESTAL provided throughout their stay by playing hose to thousands of visitors. Daily visitors could be seen walking about the ship, mouths agape in awe of our size and power.
The trip to New York provided us an unique opportunity to see a part of the U.S. we normally don’t operate near, to develop new friendships, enjoy some great liberty, and above all to show the American public what “First in Defense” is all about.
