HM2 Gerald Strode, 21, is decorated with the nation's second highest medal. The Navy Cross was presented to Strode by MajGen Donn J. Robertson, commanding general of the 1st Marine Division. Strode received the award for extraordinary heroism under fire in a battle during Operation Swift, September 4, 1967, when he saved the lives of several wounded Marines."

Marine Lance Corporal William G. Cox (Jackson, Mississippi) emerges from one of many Viet Cong tunnels found in the Batangan Peninsula. Cox mapped the tunnel and found it to be over 158 yards long and two levels deep.
