Published: 2025-01-26 20:56:15
A preliminary investigation into suspected serious sabotage has been initiated due to suspected damage to a communication cable that runs between Sweden and Latvia in the Baltic Sea. A ship suspected of having carried out the sabotage has been seized following a decision by the prosecutor.

The Security Service is conducting the preliminary investigation under the leadership of Senior Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist at the National Unit for Security Cases.

– We are now carrying out a number of concrete investigative measures, but I cannot go into what they consist of due to the ongoing preliminary investigation. Several authorities, including the National Police Operations Department, the Coast Guard and the Armed Forces are involved in the investigation. I can state that Swedish authorities are now working intensively and jointly to investigate this incident, says Senior Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist.

The prosecutor is not available to the media and has no further information to provide. When new information is available, a new press release will be sent out.

The Public Prosecutor's Office's press service does not have access to any further information or documents in the case. https://www.aklagare.se/nyheter-pre...rsokning-inledd-efter-kabelbrott-i-ostersjon/

The confiscated ship is really owned by China.

So was newnew polarbear that started the saga. And also another Chinese ship. So three cable breakers with Chinese connection.

Do our leaders have the balls to start calling out China?

HS: China owns the Vezhen ship

The Chinese state owns a ship suspected of damaging a submarine cable in the Baltic Sea, reports Helsingin Sanomat. HS investigated the backgrounds of both the shipping company and the Vezhen ship.

According to HS, the ship is registered in Malta. According to HS, the owner of the ship is Hai Kuo Shipping 2015B, registered in Hong Kong, which is backed by the Chinese state-owned leasing company ICBC Leasing.

The ship is operated by the Bulgarian shipping company Navibulgar. According to the shipping company, the anchor was lowered due to strong wind conditions. The ship was seized by Swedish authorities.

I wonder if it would be enough of an excuse for the Chinese to close the Taiwan strait from traffic, if NATO countries cause enough trouble for their seemingly innocent yet accident prone shipping in the Baltics.

It’s definitely a tense situation with China involved in multiple incidents. If things escalate enough, I could see China using the Taiwan Strait as a point of leverage. It’ll depend on how NATO responds and whether things continue to spiral. It’s a high risk game with global consequences, for sure.
