A Grumman TBF avenger torpedo bomber of VT-15 Torpedo Air Group, approaches and lands on the deck of the USS Essex (CV-9) during the Battle of Manila Bay, in World War 2. Upon landing, Lt. Robert Cosgrove (Pilot) and Sailor Digby Denzek (Radioman) can be seen in their respective forward and middle crew positions. But the rear gunner position, occupied by Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class,Loyce Edward Deen (Gunner) has been completely destroyed by enemy 40mm shell fire. As the aircraft is parked amongst others, with wings folded, sailors of the Essex take fingerprints and cut dog tags from the body of AMM2C Loyce Deen in the gunner position. Captain Carlos W. Wieber, Commanding Officer of the Essex, and her crew, participate in funeral services on the deck. A chaplain conducts the services from beside the aircraft, where Loyce Deen's remains in the gunner's position have been shrouded. Closeup view of Rear Admiral Frederick C. Sherman during the burial service. A bugler sounds taps. Beside the bugler is David L. McDonald, who was XO of the USS Essex (and later Chief of Naval Operations in the 1960s). Deen's remains are then buried at sea in the TBF avenger in which he perished. The aircraft floats off the fantail for a short time before sinking from view. Two TBF Avengers are seen flying overhead , in tribute. Crew members then disband and return to their duties. Location: Manila Philippines. Date: November 5, 1944.

George H.W. Bush rescued at sea during WWII
During an attack against Chichi Jima, a heavily fortified island that Japanese forces used for communications and supplies, Bush’s aircraft, a TBM Avenger, was hit with anti-aircraft fire. Bush’s two crewmembers were killed in the attack.

With the aircraft’s engine on fire, Bush released his payload against his target, which was a radio tower. He then ejected from his aircraft, parachuted into the ocean, and waited on an inflatable raft for four hours. Bush was eventually rescued by the USS Finback, a lifeguard submarine.

World War II Military Newsreel 1943 New Life Raft For U.S. Seamen

The newest thing in life saving equipment a three thousand pound steel raft that floats on either side. Enough concentrated rations are carried to sustain twenty-two men for twenty-one days. A mirror with which to signal for help is part of its equipment. Kept afloat by air filled bulkheads the raft is dropped for a test. Its unsinkable and can't be swamped. Merchant seamen in exposure suits abandon ship and prepare to man their life raft. Quickly they hoist sail, rig a shelter and toss out a smoke signal that goes off when it hits the water. A real life saver for victims of shipwrecks.

This video, The Crossing, explains the details involving the Sept 15, 1944 rescue of over 150 Australian and British POW's in the South China Sea, by US Submarines after the sinking of a couple of Japanese POW "HellShips". Unfortunately, these ships had not been properly marked with any Red Cross flags, and had been sunk by the American Submarines 3 days before. The American Submarine Sailors were totally unaware of the precious cargo that they had sunk 3 days previous.
This Video has two of the rescued POW's reuniting with some of the Sub Sailors that pulled them from the ocean that day.
The dramatic video from the rescue was shot by the Communication Officer of the USS Sealion II, Lt (jg) (ss) Joe (Shorty) Bates.
