The ceremonial event was held to symbolize the transition of authority from Command Sgt. Maj. Tamara Edwards to Command Sgt. Maj. James Van Zlike. A change of responsibility ceremony is a traditional event meant to reinforce noncommissioned officer authority in the U.S. Army and highlights their support to the chain of command.
