TEM: A Brief Look at The Counter-Terror Department of Turkish Police

TEM (Turkish: Terörle Mücadele, English: Counter-Terror) is one of the main departments of the Turkish Police which specializes on gathering intelligence to observe and use any means of prevention methods against terror organisations and the second parties who are supporting them with housing, smuggling weapons, financing, recruiting and training within the urban boundaries of Turkey. Firstly established in 1924 as a single division in Ankara under the name of "Department of Destructive Activities" (Turkish: Yıkıcı Faaliyetler Şubesi) as of 1970, department is expansed through every major cities in Turkey and following of 1987 re-organized under the name of TEM to counter the terrorist organisations which mostly originated from Middle East and starting to increase their activites in Turkey as a transit country. In this context in It's last four decades TEM has dealth with various terror organisations from domestic and foreign sources as well like PLO, PKK, ASALA, Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, IRA, DHKP-C and ISIS.

TEM Operation Unit

Tem Operation (Turkish: TEM Operasyon) is a special mission unit that is equipped and trained to perform missions on house raids, urban conflict, CQB and hostage rescue missions which established in early 2000s to provide more effecive and fast response through terror activities that is detected by TEM within its domestic capabilities as a department. Alongside with the Special Operation Department (PÖH), TEM Operation is the second major armed unit of Turkish Police which is designated to deal with high-risk terror situations in the urban enviroments of Turkey.
