Photos Aircraft Carriers

USS Lake Champlain (CV 39) In port, Sasebo, Japan. USS Point Cruz (CVE-119) is in the background. circa 1952-53

The "Champ" was the only carrier of the class in commission in the 1960's that never received the angled deck conversion, remaining with a straight deck until decommissioned. ESSEX and the Champ shared the carrier pier in Quonset Point Rhode Island in the 60's.

E.J. I posted those pictures of carriers inport in Yokosuka because I when I was stationed in Yokosuka I knew a Master Chief Bostwain mate who had been stationed in Yokosuka since 1953 or so....yea 20 years +. He had some great sea stories to tell about when Yokosuka was the #1 liberty port in WESPAC.

When I see the ships inport I can imagine all the sailors on liberty on the Honcho/Thieves Alley..just having a good time...oh so long ago...

F14 Tomcat stares down F/A 18 Hornet. No matter how more capable, the F14 will loose her job to the F/A 18, not because of competency but because the F18's salary (operating costs) is much lower.

USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) at anchor off Monaco, on 3 April 1983, during her global circumnavigation. The separate mast now supports an SPS-49 radar. Aircraft from CVW-15 are assembled on the flight deck. Note the port side antenna group for ECCM purposes, belonging to the SLQ-17 system, suspended well outboard near catapults Nos. 3 and 4. As in Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), Carl Vinson was at the time equipped with only one Van Horn bridle retrieval catcher for catapult No.1. Photo courtesy of Pradignac et Leo.

FA-18C/D Hornets have ended their almost four-decade tenure aboard the aircraft carriers of the U.S. Navy. The final carrier deployment by the "Legacy Hornet" has officially concluded after the return of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323, or VMFA-323, the “Death Rattlers,” from its final cruise aboard the supercarrier USS Nimitz.
