USS Johnston (DD-557)

Caladan Oceanic announced this morning that they successfully relocated and surveyed the wreckage of the destroyer off Samar found by RV Petrel back in 2019. In a privately-funded expedition, they were able to go deeper than Petrel using the submersible DSV Limiting Factor, and discovered the main wreck, confirming the identify as USS Johnston (DD-557). Photos are from their website press release and show the bow, forward 5” guns, bridge, and torpedo tubes. The main wreck was found at a depth of 21,180’ (6,456m), making this officially the deepest shipwreck known to man.
-
Johnston was lost during the famous Battle off Samar as one of the escorts that defended the Jeep carriers of Taffy 3 against the Japanese onslaught from Yamato, Nagato, Haruna, Kongo, and supporting forces.
