After a 133-day deployment overseas, Iran’s 75th flotilla, which includes the Makran forward base ship and the Sahand frigate, returned home.
Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani said that the 75th flotilla had marked a watershed in the history of the country’s naval industry by successfully carrying out a major mission.

His statement stated that the flotilla had returned to Iran after travelling 45,000 kilometres across three oceans, passing through 55 countries on three continents, and transmitting the message of peace and friendship from Iran.

The admiral described Iran as the only country that can ensure its maritime security on its own, and he stated that the Iranian flotilla completed the mission without the assistance of any other country.

He went on to say that the Iranian warships did not need to dock in any port in order to meet their technical requirements.

In a statement issued this week, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, congratulated the navy on its accomplishment.

Having set sail in April, the two warships crossed the Indian Ocean and sailed around Africa before reaching the Atlantic Ocean, where they docked. The vessels, which never made it to Venezuela, were reportedly being watched by the United States at the time of their alleged monitoring. The flotilla also travelled to Russia in July to take part in a naval parade commemorating Russian Navy Day.

Sources here have confirmed an AP report from the weekend that American THAAD and Patriot batteries have been quietly removed from Prince Sultan Air Base, located outside of Riyadh.

Now, Israeli sources say, Saudi Arabia is seriously considering its alternatives. Among them: China, Russia and, in a move that might have seemed impossible a few years ago, Israel.
Specifically, the Saudis are considering either the Iron Dome, produced by Rafael, which is better against short range rockets, or the Barak ER, produced by IAI, which is designed to intercept cruise missiles. Israeli defense sources told Breaking Defense that such a deal would be realistic, as long as both nations received approval of Washington; one source added that Saudi “interest in the Israeli systems has reached a very practical phase.”

Israel:
The Israel Defense Forces is working to significantly boost its air defences, particularly in northern Israel, in light of the growing threat of Iranian-made and Iranian-designed drones that have flooded into the Middle East in recent years, The Times of Israel has learned.

Within two years, the IDF intends to have a full, permanent defensive coverage in place over the airspace of northern Israel, with plans to eventually expand this to the entire country. Currently, the Israeli Air Force, which is tasked with defending the nation’s skies, has a number of fixed air defence systems in various parts of the country, which are supplemented by mobile batteries in times of heightened tensions or when attacks are expected.

In addition to the threats that Israel’s air defences have faced in the past — rocket and missile fire, enemy aircraft — the IDF is now increasingly forced to contend with large and small unmanned aerial vehicles. Once the domain of nation-states, drone technology has become increasingly available to terrorist groups.
