The Federal National Guard Troops Service of the Russian Federation or RosGvardiya was created on 2016 as a Federal Service that amalgamates all the paramilitary, antiterrorists, special operations and riot supression units that previously were controlled mainly by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Inside this "Gendarmerie" on steroids we can find a good number of interesting units, from 604 Center of Special Purpose (known as Vityaz) to OMON units across Russian Federation, so probably will be interesting to create a thread dedicated to all that units.

What's the difference between OMON and SOBR?

Usually you will see a lot of pictures from OMON units looking as top notch Special Operation units but in reality they are mainly anti riot units with a antiterrorist capacity. SOBR, in the other hand, are more focused on antiterror, antigang, assault operations. But sometimes the difference is tenuous. Supposing that "the S**t hits the fan" and there aren´t any FSB unit available (nor Vityaz), SOBR will lead the assault and OMON will set the perimeter and provide a back up capacity. I would say that the best analogy is to compare SOBR units with US Police Departments´ SWAT teams. SOBR units became quite popular in Russia thanks to be the ones most closely involved in the fight against the mafia and being quite known by their public opinion back in the Yeltsin days. To the point that they got their own TV show called "SOBR", just as SWAT teams had "SWAT" TV show :)

Are these SWAT teams financed from the local budgets like in the USA or from the federal?

Back in the day the SOBR teams were dependant from the regional MVD´s and through them from the federal MVD to the point that richer regions/cities could assume bigger budgets for their SOBR teams. Nowadays all are under the FSVNG umbrella, but the budget diferences persist, as is obvious that FSVNG is going to be more inclined to spend more money on units deployed on bigger/richer/more inhabited areas than in smaller/poorer/less inhabited areas.

This reminds me i have not seen season 2 of Punisher yet. Thanks for the pics.
