Russia to Quarantine Troops Rehearsing for Postponed WWII Parade on Coronavirus Concerns

President Vladimir Putin postponed the landmark parade to mark the 75th anniversary of Soviet victory in World War II until later in 2020 as Russia struggles to contain the rapid spread of the coronavirus. Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed Friday that dozens of cadets, some of whom were reportedly involved in parade rehearsals, tested positive for Covid-19 in Moscow.

“The military teams have been ordered to return to home bases in accordance with the decision to postpone the military parade on Red Square,” Russia’s state-run TASS news agency quoted the Defense Ministry as saying.

“Upon arrival, all military personnel who took part in rehearsals will be placed in two-week quarantine,” it added.

The military said that all equipment that was used in the rehearsals will be disinfected, according to TASS.

Preparations for the military parade had been underway since February. Around 15,000 troops and 400 pieces of equipment were estimated to be preparing to take part in the 2020 parade.

So far, there would appear to be some 5,000 diagnosed cases of COVID-19 among some 1.3 million active-duty troops, with a death rate an order of magnitude less than in American society writ large.

The Defense Department has set a goal to be testing 60,000 service members a day for coronavirus by June.
The ability to test 60,000 troops a day, which would cover all active duty troops in a few weeks, won’t happen all at once.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper has signed off on a four-tier scheme: tier one would include critical national capabilities, like nuclear forces; tier two includes deployed forces, tier three includes forward-deployed or redeploying forces; and tier four is the remainder of the force.

The infected servicemen are six Chilean Navy personnel who arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, in early January. After being locally tested and proving positive for Covid-19, they are set to remain in isolation at their hotel until the second week of April, navy officials said.

The infected sailors are part of a group of 50 “specialists” who are in Australia to receive technical training in preparation for the takeover of former RAN frigates HMAS Newcastle and HMAS Melbourne , sources familiar with the programme and situation told Jane’s .

The insurgent group has launched a public-health awareness campaign that both the Afghan Ministry of Public Health and the US State Department have publicly appreciated and welcomed. The Taliban’s response to Covid-19 has been a stark contrast from other terrorist groups, including ISIS and al Qaeda, who have called Covid-19 a “divine retribution” and have used the opportunity to mount attacks and recruit new followers.

That's actually a bit of a good sign. It might suggest they've realised they need to assume a bit responsibility for the community if they want to be seen as a force that strives for the good of the country.

The public in the West often forgets the Taliban are not freedom fighters, but a party to a civil war. Everyone who's not Pashtun has every reason in the world to be wary of the Taliban.

An undisclosed number of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) protection troops have been decontaminating hundreds of square kilometres daily in all of Russia’s four military districts, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reported in a series of announcements since 24 April.

CBRN protection troops equipped with decontamination vehicles and kits are consuming tens of tonnes of calcium hypochlorite bleaching agent each day. The interiors and exteriors of factories, administrative buildings, food halls, road surfaces, vehicles, and open spaces are being decontaminated, while checkpoints and health facilities are being established.
