Another scrub fire has erupted on Sunday evening in the North Canterbury region.

The fire was reported at 8.10pm along Waikari Valley Road in Hurunui district, about 76 kilometres north of Christchurch.

Fire and emergency NZ southern shift manager Alex Norris said they were in initial stage of containing the fire and the exact impact of it’s still unknown.

“We are still working to contain the fire.

The in thing is to let the land grow wild or plant for carbon credits creating a landscape of fuel for fires.

Most of that area is farmland so more likely to be long grass for making hay, unless it crosses a few ridges and ends up in wine country.

I'm going with the informed opinion that it's our sun that has been controlling our planet's thermostat, and not humans that other humans want to make money off of and control with from an ulterior agenda.

I agree it is the third fire they have had in the area? At that rate it is a worse story than Australia due to the grass growth which is faster in NZ on lifestyle blocks not being used and becoming the perfect fuel by summertime. Will be interesting when they work out the cause.

What happened to the Merinos and rabbits on bare summer paddocks. Replaced by lifestylers and rank grass, pines and scrub.

Scrub, Pines and smoldering slash are extending the firewatch by weeks.
They closed off the road to Richmond Forest park due to the newly established pine forest afraid of fire. The Stags will be happy.
The carbon credit scheme should include extra fire insurance premium and instant return of the credits when it burns down or causes flooding so they also have to have a bond for that. It is clear when Pines catch fire they cannot control it even with aerial monsoon buckets and plenty of helicopters sitting around needing work.

Forest industry the only one able to reap all the benefits and socialize all the costs.

And volcanos, don't forget volcanos.

The energy network in the Netherlands is overloaded due to solar panels and wind turbines, causing blackouts. The warnings were there for many years, but as usual the clown governments and their lackeys in the energy industry, often former politicians themselves, instead of improving the grid chose to do nothing. Because our ideology doesn't care about your engineering -or something.

By abandoning gas in favor of electricity for heating the geniuses have magnified the problems to the extent where new building projects are on years long waiting lists until they can be hooked up to the grid without the grid collapsing in on itself. This includes not only housing, but everything from businesses to schools and other government buildings.

The solution being taken increasingly often? Powering off the solar panels and electrically powered heaters and running diesel generators. Lots and lots of diesel generators.

ACT our right wing liberal and radical ideas party wants to use carbon injection into the oil wells, suprisingly the left wing communist Greens are the next best supporters of it.

So morning TV has sponsored tourist guide on advising to fly to Canada and see the glaciers, get them to melt faster...where the water goes is a mystery...

The Suez canal level has dropped forcing half the ships to divert.

Electricity is the best energy. and the new generation of nuclear power plants will seal the deal. Solar and wind can only be supplements but when you take a look at carbon emissions, France stands out strong thanks to its power plants. Austria and Norway do great with hydro.

In iceland last year they use a lot of geothermal. it' s so cheap they grow tomatoes in greenhouses all year long.

Agreed on nuclear energy, Telmar. But wind turbines are S**t, and cause lots of damage to the environment. And I''m not talking about the poor little birdies sliced off by the rotating turbines either. One needs but to look at such pictures. The 1st one is the metal cage which will be filled with concrete to anchor the turbine : I guess you need to use quite a bit of fossil energy to melt and shape all this metal. The second one is the concrete base itself : the - fossil-energy powered! - crane gives the scale. And of course, producing concrete is also a fossil energy consuming process.
