NOTE! On the right sleeve of Col. Michael Schoonover's uniform is the RARE, 'combat patch' of the (inactivated) 8th Infantry Division (Mechanized) denoting his service in either Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm 1990-1991 or Provide Comfort 1991. *The 8th I.D. itself did not deploy as a whole, however several battalion-sized units supported other USAREUR elements in Saudi Arabia against Iraq. After the war other units from the division deployed to Southern Turkey to assist in humanitarian operations for the Kurds. Col. Schoonver's bio does list which he participated in.
