John William COTTAM. Private 30536, 2nd Lincolnshire Regiment. Born 1881 Besthorpe, Nottinghamshire to William and Ann Cottam, nee Parkes. 1881-1891 with his mother and siblings residing with his grandparents John and Sarah Parkes at South Collingham, Nottinghamshire. 1911 with his parents and his wife to be Sarah Gertrude Beardsley at 52 Glenthorpe House, Dale Street, Ilkeston. Occupation, house painter and paper hanger. 11 April 1914 he married Sarah Gertrude Beardsley at Holy trinity church, Ilkeston. He was aged 24 at residing at 52 Dale Street, Ilkeston. Sarah was aged 24 and residing at 4 Factory Lane, Ilkeston. He was wounded, (date not known) in France, invalided to England 30 April 1918 and died of wounds on an ambulance train in England en route to a hospital 1 May 1918 aged 37 years. His widow, (then called Goodson) of 11 Gordon Street, Ilkeston was granted a war gratuity 1 August 1918, revised 16 October 1918 and 16 December 1919.
