Leonard NEWBOLD. Rifleman 12204, 11th King's Royal Rifle Corps. Born 9 February 1897 to Richard and Sarah Jane Newbold, of 85, Mount Prospect Villas, Little Hallam Lane, Ilkeston. He joined the Royal Rifle Corps at Winchester 5 January 1915 aged 18 years, occupation, collier. Joined the BEF inn France14 December 1915, received a gunshot wound to both legs 25 August 1916. Invalided to England 26 August 1916 admitted into General Hospital, Nottingham 27 August and discharged 14 October 1916. He was re-admitted suffering from the same complaint into 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth 28 January 1917. Amputation of left leg from the thigh was performed 29 January 1917, with complication of secondary haemorrhage from the stump. He passed away at 3rd London General, St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington at 5.20am 10 February 1917 aged 20 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 6 June 1917, revised 20 October 1919.
