G140 ALFRED HAROLD TURTON. MBE, Commissioned Gunner Royal Navy on shore base HMS St.Angelo, Malta. Born 5 October 1885 at Kingston, Portsmouth to Alfred and Julia Smith Turton, nee Sennett. He enlisted 22 July 1902 on HMS Northampton as 221885 Boy 2nd Class. Ordinary Seaman 5 October 1903, Able Seaman 1 October 1904, Leading Seaman 31 August 1908, Petty Officer 8 November 1912, Acting Gunner 17 January 1915 and Commissioned Gunner 1 August 1924. In 1911 he was serving in the Royal Navy aged 25 on HMS Essex with the Fourth Cruiser Squadron at Palme Bay, Balearic Island. On the 30 January 1923 he embarked from London for Melbourne, Australia on Steamship line Commonwealth Government, ship S.S. Jervis Bay. Rank, Gunner Royal Navy aged 37 years. He was awarded the MBE on the 8 June 1939. Died on HMS St Angelo 26th March 1940 aged 55 years of a (Pistol) gunshot wound to his right temple. fractures of skull and laceration of brain, suicide. Wills and Admin, Ancestry - His residence in England was 62a Underhill Road, East Dulwich, London. His effects went to Adeline Ellen Elizabeth Turton, spinster.
