One British soldier has been killed and two injured in an incident in Basra, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
A spokesman said it was believed to have been a roadside bomb attack on a British convoy on Monday morning.
He said the wounded are receiving treatment but the extent of their injuries is not yet known.
The news came shortly after the Iraqi foreign minister said the handover of power in Iraq was brought forward from 30 June to Monday.
The MoD spokesman told BBC News Online: "We can confirm a British soldier was killed, and two were wounded.
