Police officers stand guard near the site of a terror attack at a night club in Istanbul, Turkey, Jan. 1, 2017. Thirty five people were killed and 40 others wounded in a terror attack on a popular night club in Istanbul early Sunday morning, Istanbul's governor said. (Xinhua/He Canling). An assailant believed to have been dressed in a Santa Claus costume opened fire at a nightclub in Istanbul during New Year’s celebrations Saturday, killing at least 35 people and wounding 40 others in what the province’s governor described as a terror attack.

Gov. Vasip Sahin said the attacker, armed with a long-barreled weapon, killed a policeman and a civilian outside the club before entering and firing on people partying inside. He did not say who may have carried out the attack.

“Unfortunately (he) rained bullets in a very cruel and merciless way on innocent people who were there to celebrate New Year’s and have fun,” Sahin told reporters. (AP)

JAKARTA, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- An Indonesian anti-terror squad on Monday arrested a terrorist after he set off a bomb and burned an office building in the capital city of West Java province, local police chief said.

"The militant has been paralyzed and sustained wounds," Inspector General Anton Charlian, West Java police chief, was quoted by Metro TV as saying at the scene.

The militant exploded one of the two bombs he carried at Pandawa park in Bandung city, the capital of the province at around 9 a.m., and escaped to a nearby Pandawa village office and burned the office building, he said.

"We have followed the movement of the man, he is a member of a terrorist group, classified as an old terrorist network," said Charlian.

He disclosed that the exploded bomb was categorized as being low explosive.

Police seized a gun and a backpack after paralyzing the militant, he added.

Five dead, around 40 injured in UK parliament 'terrorist' attack

By Toby Melville and William James | LONDON
Five people were killed and about 40 injured in London on Wednesday after a car plowed into pedestrians and a suspected Islamist-inspired attacker stabbed a policeman close to Britain's parliament.

The dead, in what police called a "marauding terrorist attack," included the assailant and the policeman he stabbed. The other three victims were among those hit by the car as it sped across Westminster Bridge before crashing into railings just outside parliament.

Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the attack as "sick and depraved".

"The location of this attack was no accident," she said in a statement outside her 10 Downing Street office late in the evening.

"The terrorist chose to strike at the heart of our capital city, where people of all nationalities, religions and cultures come together to celebrate the values of liberty, democracy and freedom of speech."

Any attempt to defeat those values through violence was "doomed to failure", May said.

Mark Rowley, Britain's most senior counter-terrorism officer, told reporters the attack started when a car was driven over Westminster Bridge, hitting and injuring members of the public and three police officers.

"A car then crashed near to parliament and at least one man, armed with a knife, continued the attack and tried to enter parliament," Rowley said.

He said the police's "fast-paced investigation" was working on the assumption that the attack was "Islamist-related terrorism". Police believed they knew the identity of the attacker but would not provide details at this stage, he said.

29 April 2017...Violence has erupted in Brazil at the end of the country's first general strike in more than 20 years.

Buses and cars have been set on fire in Rio de Janeiro's city centre. Road blocks set up by activists were also ablaze and shops were vandalised.

For most of the day the strike had been largely peaceful. Many people stayed at home and shops, schools and banks remained closed across the country.

Unions called the strike in protest at proposed pension reforms.

President Michel Temer said he regretted the incidents in Rio. But he stressed that he would continue his "efforts to modernise the country".

Brazilian workers and the government are working together, he said, to get the country out of "the worst recession in its history."

At least two students and a member of the National Guard were killed in the clashes. The opposition called for renewed protests today, as some Caracas business owners returned to inspect damaged and looted stores.
