Shindisi Georgian movie about one of the engagements of the 2008 Russian - Georgian War. The trailer is in Georgian and Russian. Since the movie won Grand Prize at Warsaw Film Festival, one has to assume that the version with English subtitles does exist. I leave it up to my Georgian brothers to provide a better context about the story that inspired the movie.
Blurb stolen from IMDB - Thirty-four years after his death, Airman William H. Pitsenbarger, Jr. ("Pits") is awarded the nation's highest military honor, for his actions on the battlefield.
New Russian movie Rzhev My grandfather took part in this meatgrinder, and the plot of the movie is very similar to what he told me about his actions there at the end of 1942. Unfortunately, the trailer is full of cliches. Still, I'll be checking this movie out.
I watched it at the cinema, twice, watched it on the plane over the course of a couple of flights, and have bought 3 DVDs, to try and support the mob that made it, as they were done over by their distributor and promoter and will be lucky to break even on the whole enterprise.
I found the movie to be not too bad, although it could have stood on its own without some of the manufactured drama. I imagine some families are not too happy with how their boys were treated by that manufactured drama. Some of the military stuff that was both not quite right and not even fucking close to right can be explained away by budget or cinematic necessity.
It's a historic-patriotic movie from Romania. Back when practical effect were the norm and you used soldiers as extras, since it was a communist regime and "no" was not an answer.
