Leutnant der Reserve Werner Voss, from Krefeld, Germany, was Germany’s 4th highest ranking ace of World War 1. With 48 kills to his credit he is still considered by many to be the greatest pilot of that war, having skills that even surpassed Manfred von Richthofen, the “Red Baron”.Although most of Voss’ victories were achieved in his Albatros DIII, his most iconic aircraft was Fokker F.1 prototype 103/17 which he flew in September of 1917. Debate continues as to whether the cowling of 103/17 was painted olive or yellow, but regardless of the color its most easily recognizable feature was the face painted on the front. The Last Face You’ll See depicts Voss’ 47th victory, a 45Sq Sopwith Camel, which he scored on Sept. 11, 1917.Voss met his demise in 103/17 on Sept. 23, 1917 when he engaged in a dogfight with Se5a Scouts from 56 Sq RFC.
