Unironically, a lot of very advanced and very critical tech infrastructure all over the Western world still runs on W95, 98 or XP. And what looks comical to us, is actually somewhat of an indictment of more modern operating systems.
Never change a running system.

Unironically, a lot of very advanced and very critical tech infrastructure all over the Western world still runs on W95, 98 or XP. And what looks comical to us, is actually somewhat of an indictment of more modern operating systems.
Never change a running system.

This is mainly due to using highly tailored software which cannot be updated without switching OS as the libraries and extensions they use are no longer supported. Switching OS often means complete rewrites and all of the issues associated with that; downtime, new bugs, having to update terminals (often replacing) etc.

Software running on systems without readily accessible input ports and/or connections over open networks may be old, but as long as it keeps running on the same system and hardware it's stable and that's considered more important.

The problem with that is when someone like (say) Israel writes Stuxnet and the virus gets easily transported around the "offline" computers via the USB stick/Floppy Disk used to update them.

There's always a vulnerability, if that vulnerability is the people who know most about the system what are you gonna do

Feed them to the dogs if you're Best Korea, otherwise a refresher safety briefing.
