Bangladesh Army's BMTF ( Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory ) under the '902 heavy workshop is upgrading the old Type-59 light tank into a modern generation main battle tank with Chinese assistance known as Type-59(BD)G Durjoy with equipment equivalent to the Chinese Type-96 MBT. 174 tanks have been upgraded in the first batch.

Weapon upgrades are :

• 125mm smoothbore main gun with new turret ( 28 rounds ) and also can fire APFSDS,HEAT-FS,HE-FS rounds as well.
• Type-85 12.7×108mm anti-air machine gun (3000 round)
• Co-axial 7.62mm GPMG (600 rounds)
  
• 81mm smoke grenades
• Ability to fire ATGMs ( Anti-Tank Guided Missile )

Other upgrades are :

• Chinese 3rd generation ERA on front, turret and side skirts. Modular composite armor on turret front. Cage armor on back of turret to protect from RPG hits.
• Nuclear radioactivity,Biological and Chemical ( NBC ) protection suite.
• Collective fire supression system
• Laser warning reciever
• Laser designator
• Fire control system
• Tactical combat data link
  
• Thermal and night imaging system
• Laser range finder
• Electronic Countermeasures
• Active protection system
• 730 HP diesel engine
• VRC-2000L radio
